Glorious Run Comes to an End

Posted by: MarkDolven

The Core have come a long way up to this point. With a mediocre regular season, to flipping the switch, winning not only the North American Finals but also being another point away from a second consecutive appearance in the World Final. The match started off with FIFA, as Brock was able to sneak one goal past bazza to start off the night. This was followed by DOA: Female, where a much anticipated duel between two of the strongest female players took place. Defying critics and finally being the underdog, Kat was able to come back from a 2 point deficit and win 5-4. Source was a worry point for both teams, but the result was fairly close with Salvo taking a small lead 11-7 (overall: 15-13) heading into Forza. This was the turning point in the match, as Birmingham took advantage of the grid and never looked back, with Phantom being able to grab a 3rd place finish to stop the bleeding, ending 5-2 with a overall of 20-15 in Salvo's favor.

Things looked dire at this point as Carolina Core's franchised player, Ryan "offbeatninja" Ward, as he was noticably shaken at the realization of what needed to be done. Even beyond nerves, Ryan secured point after point, creating one of the most exciting comebacks to date. Overtime was achieved, but was stopped short as Messy was able to pick up this last crucial point decisively, ending the match 21-20 with Salvo advancing to the 2008 World Final. This officially ends Carolina's run to the World Championship and back to the drawing boards for next year. This match was amazing to watch and probably should of been a championship final on its own. This will be the first time in the history of The CGS that we will have a mixed-region final and it looks to be definate showdown between European and North American momentum. Congrats to the winners and good luck to everyone in the upcoming final. Once again, thank you to all the Core fans and others who have supported the team this year, and we hope that in 2009 we will see your return to cheer us on for another run at the NA and World Finals. Get money!

My sincere respect to the entire Core team for making the 2008 Season one of the best aspects of the year. I remember sitting at the desk at EA LA and talking to Mark and his team after a very nice run to start the season. At that moment I knew for a fact that Mark Dolven and the Carolina Core were going to rock the boat in 2008. Not only did you do it... but you did it in an amazing fashion.

I was certain that Carolina Core was going to be the 2008 World Champs... it was almost strange to see what happened tonight.

As 2008 comes to a close... it seems that 2009 is just around the corner. I can't wait to see what the Core brings us in 2009.

PS Offbeat... your 5-0 was incredible. I know the loss was heavy, but you still did an amazing thing tonight. Sometimes our biggest losses, are the ones that will never be forgotten. And even though you were on the losing end, you still made history tonight. Mr. CGS lives on

Not the best regular season, but you guys really ran with it in the post-season. It's sad to see that you're out of the running for World Champs this year, but at the end of the day you guys still fought and won the Region 1 Championship. You win some, you lose some, and 2009 is another year to become the best.

Amazing showing tonight indeed, Offbeat. Your performance tonight was quite possibly one of the best, especially under such conditions. All I had was the IRC feed, and I was shaking a little here. As Wheat said, it will likely be remembered as one of the best showings in CGS history.

To the CS:S squad, a majority of people here on the forums are saying that it's your fault that it came down to this. You guys performed well tonight. A couple rounds could've gone either way, but the Salvo have a strong CS team as well. Any part of the team could've gotten one more goal, prevented the loss of a round, or maybe nudged an opponent's car a little bit better to make up that one point. Don't put this loss solely on yourselves - the CGS is all about the team, and when close matches come around, it stresses that exact value of the league.

Many thanks to our few fans and family out there. Many thanks to Dolven for being the best GM this year. Thank you Eric for being a monster in game and good teammate out of game. DOA did great all year so hats off to you two. CS keep your heads up, you did your part this season as well. Andrew, dude.....I love you man.

Ryan, I have to bow down to you sir. You took incredible odds against you and almost made it work, a DOA beast without doubt. We let you down, not the other way around. It was not fair to put you in that spot.

Why is it, when you view the cs:source score on the outside its correct, but when you actually view the article it's wrong...

Outside: 11:7 Salvo

Inside: 11:7 Core

In all fairness Phantom, you and GEL deserve a big pat on the back too. Not only for an awesome season, but you kept the Core alive last night in that race. It was one of the few times I had seen you guys in a "losing" position only to come back and keep Core in the game.

After the whole thing I event commented to ReD, that it was probably the most amazing Forza comeback I had ever seen.

Congrats on a good season, guys. I know it didn't end the way you'd want, but I think Marcus and Phantom summed it up nicely. You have a lot to be proud of, and I can't help but feel the Core will be in contention once again in 2009.

I am proud of you guys! It is an honor to be a part of the Core family, and you guys had an amazing season. Everyone had their doubts at the beginning of the season, but you guys pulled through and are the North American champions!!

I am more than impressed with the Forza team, you guys have done such a wonderful job. GEL, Mark couldn't have drafted a better teammate for Phantom. You guys ROCKED Forza this year, I can't wait for the next season!

Ryan, you proved why you are Mr. CGS last night in that match! You are amazing, and this is why you are the Core's franchise player! Kat, FABULOUS season girl, you and Ryan are an unstoppable duo~!

Andrew, you are a perfect addition to the Core team. This season wouldn't have been the same without you. What an awesome season you had as well!

Good season as well CS team. You guys were up against some hard teams this season, but you all had a wonderful season.

I might be a little biased, but Mark is my GM of the year. He has been the only GM to lead a team to the North American finals two years in a row, this says a lot about him. I am proud of you all and can't wait for a wonderful 2009 season!

GOOD JOB CAROLINA CORE, NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPS OF 2008!!!

DjWheat and Phantom, your words to Offbeat and the rest of the team cannot be topped. Offbeat's performance was outstanding and as was said it will be a piece of Cgs history. The Core team did their fans and families proud. There is no other team that rocks the Cgs world like the Core.

We knew heading into last night that if we didn't play our best, that the Salvo would upset us. They played amazing and did just that. Hats off to them.

Offbeat's comeback last night is the single most courageous thing I have ever seen in eSports. It's a shame that he didn't win that sixth round, but no one can fault him at all for last night's loss. He is a legend and Mr. CGS forever in my book.

Obviously there were some poor performances last night by some of the members of our team, but no one is at fault for our loss. We win and lose as a team. We took a miracle chance of just making the playoffs and turned it into a North American Championship and a 3rd/4th place finish in the World. That is a team with true character and I'm proud that I was along for the ride as these athletes all stepped up their games.

I can't wait to get back to work in chasing the Championship for 2009, but for now good luck to the two teams that are still in the event.

Thank you to everyone on the Core and our fans. You guys make all of the hard work worthwhile.

Great effort last night. NA Champions and the Semi-Finals in World's is a pretty damn good season if you ask me. Hell, there are two NA teams that still haven't even played in World's yet, let alone making it to the semi's. I can't wait till next year. You all are awesome!
