DOA4 Weight Classes Explained
Written by Kenny "H2O Evil" Leite, Doa4 Feature Writer
Before I start explaining the characters and their weight differences, let’s make sure you know how to read the Dead or Alive strings. The Xbox 360 D-pad and analog stick are just like a num-lock pad on your keyboard. The numbers 1-9 on the num-lock pad is the way DOA strings are called out.
Also, P means punch, K means kick, F means free.
Some examples of DOA strings are like;
• Kasumi’s forward punch which is 6P
• Hayabusa’s low sweep kick which is 2F+K
• Gen Fu’s high crush punch which is 3P+K.
• Hitomi’s high elbow punch which is 7P
• Ein’s most damaging grab which is 33F+P
Super Light Weights
Alright now that we have that out of the way, let’s talk about why with some characters you can get a combo off and some you can’t. The reason behind this is the weight difference of each character. For example, Kasumi, being one of the super light weights in the game is a very juggle friendly character, meaning she is one of the easier characters to get juggles off on. Some of the other super light weights are, Ayane, Kokoro, Hitomi and Eliot. Now I’m going to be using one character example and test out which juggles I can do on each weight classes, and that character is my main character, Kasumi. On super lightweights Kasumi can get all of her main juggles off. Some examples are; off of 6F+P (Which is Kasumi’s super launcher grab); PPP~P6P(hold6)KK, PPK(hold6)KK, PPP~PPKK and PPP~PP6KK. More examples of juggles you can do with Kasumi on a super light weight characters are; on counter hit blow; PP6PK~P6P(hold6)KK, 6K~P6P(hold6)KK, and 8K~ P6P(hold6)KK. With Kasumi’s mid kick counter, 6F, which launches your opponent in the air, some juggles you can get are 8P~P6PKK, F+K~P6PKK. Off of Kasumi’s 2F+P, (which is Kasumi’s down grab) you can get, PPP~6PKK and PPK(hold6)KK.
Light Weights
Now we move onto the light weight characters, which consists of Lei-Fang, Lisa, Brad Wong, Jann Lee, and Zack. Just like super light weights, light weight characters are easy to juggle. With that little bit of extra weight though, getting a juggle off might require a bit more timing. Light weights are easy to juggle, yes, but they just require a bit more patience. The Kasumi juggles that you can do to super light weights and listed above, you can also do to light weights.
Mid Weights and Mid-Heavy Weights
The next weight class up is the mid weights, this weight class consists of; Christie, Tina, Ein, Hayabusa, and Hayate. With this weight class, comes strict timing with every juggle. If you are a frame off, you will miss the juggle. Kasumi juggles off of 1F, which is Kasumi’s low counter hold, but in the example we just countered a low kick, that causes the opponent to bounce off the ground and Kasumi can juggle off of it. PPP~6PKK after countering their low kick, is strict on timing and you must execute it right, or you will miss it.
When you have characters that are mid-heavy like Helena and Gen Fu, you can get most of the juggles explained above, but they just require very strict timing. The reason Helena and Gen Fu are the only ones to be in the weight class, mid weight, is because certain juggles with other characters work on them because they are mid, but certain juggles with other characters don’t because they are heavy that would work on others characters.

Heavy Weights
The next weight class up is the heavy weights. The characters in this class are Bayman, Bass, and Leon. Now with weight comes both advantage and disadvantage, especially being a heavy weight. When you are a heavy weight character juggles are extremely hard to get off and some juggles you just can’t get off, because they fall too quick. With Kasumi against this weight class, you have to keep it simple by following attacks after you launch your opponent with 6PKK and PP6PK. When you execute Kasumi’s super launcher grab (6F+P), you have to keep it simple with juggles like PPP~P6P(hold6)KK and PPK(hold6)KK. The disadvantage you have with this weight class is of course, with weight comes slowness but with weight also comes more damage, so every hit really does count.
Super Heavy Weight and Devil Weight
There are still two more characters in the game, but some CGS spectators may not know about them because they are banned from tournament play. These characters are the super heavy weight; Spartan-458 (Nicole) and the devil weight; Tengu. With these two characters, they are by far the hardest to juggle. You have to keep it so simple with you juggles, so you can’t really get much damage off on them. Kasumi may be fast, but her damage with simple juggles is very low. Like the heavy weights, you have disadvantages and advantages with these two weight classes. Advantage being, you are hard to be juggled, and you can deal the damage if your juggles hit. Disadvantage, of course, you have weight, you are just plain out slow.
